Teerth raj Prayag king of pilgrimage It is a meeting point of holy rivers Ganga , Yamuna & Saraswati. Prayag is venerated in the hymns of the Rig Veda. It is also referred to as“Triveni Sangam- the confluence of the subterranean river Saraswati, Ganga and Yamuna.” According to legends Prayag remains intact at the time of the great deluge and Vishnu resides here as a Yoga Murthy, on a banyan leaf in the form of a child. Vishnu is referred to as Veni Mahadeva, and Shiva is believed to be personified here as the immortal banyan tree or the Akshaya Vata Vriksham. Prayag is also associated with Amrit (nectar of immortality).
It is said that the Prayag Kumbh mela is the largest and holiest of all melas and is believed to be the most auspicious. millions of pilgrims take bath on the banks of the holy Sangam on all the important bathing dates. The Purna (complete) Kumbh or Maha Kumbh, the biggest and the most auspicious fair, which falls once every 12 years, is always held in Payaag. Ardha Kumbh Mela is held every 6th year and the Magh Mela is the annual version of the Kumbh. The main bathing days are known as ‘Shahi Snans’ or ‘Royal Bathing Days’.
