Religious significance of Magh Maas

माघ मास चल रहा है, इसमें रोज 15 मिनट ओम का गुंजन करने का नियम ले लो । मैं आज आपसे यह गुरुदक्षिणा माँग रहा हूँ ।

‘पद्म पुराण’ के उत्तर खण्ड में माघ मास के माहात्म्य का वर्णन करते हुए कहा गया है कि व्रत, दान व तपस्या से भी भगवान श्रीहरि को उतनी प्रसन्नता नहीं होती, जितनी माघ मास में ब्राह्ममुहूर्त में उठकर स्नानमात्र से होती है।

व्रतैर्दानस्तपोभिश्च न तथा प्रीयते हरिः।
माघमज्जनमात्रेण यथा प्रीणाति केशवः।।

अतः सभी पापों से मुक्ति व भगवान की प्रीति प्राप्त करने के लिए प्रत्येक मनुष्य को माघ-स्नान व्रत करना चाहिए। इसका प्रारम्भ पौष की पूर्णिमा से होता है।
माघ मास की ऐसी विशेषता है कि इसमें जहाँ कहीं भी जल हो, वह गंगाजल के समान होता है। इस मास की प्रत्येक तिथि पर्व हैं। कदाचित् अशक्तावस्था में पूरे मास का नियम न ले सकें तो शास्त्रों ने यह भी व्यवस्था की है तीन दिन अथवा एक दिन अवश्य माघ-स्नान व्रत का पालन करें। इस मास में स्नान, दान, उपवास और भगवत्पूजा अत्यन्त फलदायी है।

माघ मास कि प्रमुख तिथियाँ :

( बुधवारी अष्टमी )

मंगलवारी चतुर्थी, रविवारी सप्तमी, बुधवारी अष्टमी , सोमवती अमावस्या – ये चार तिथियाँ सूर्यग्रहण के बराबर कही गयी हैं। इनमें किया गया स्नान, दान व श्राद्ध अक्षय होता है।

( षटतिला एकादशी )

माघ मास के कृष्ण पक्ष की एकादशी ‘षटतिला एकादशी’ के नाम से जानी जाती है। इस दिन (29 जनवरी) काले तिल तथा काली गाय के दान का भी बड़ा माहात्म्य है। तिल मिश्रित जल से स्नान, तिल का उबटन, तिल से हवन, तिलमिश्रित जल का पान व तर्पण, तिलमिश्रित भोजन, तिल का दान – ये छः कर्म पाप का नाश करने वाले हैं।

( मौनी अमावस्या)

माघ मास के कृष्ण पक्ष की अमावस्या ‘मौनी अमावस्या’ के रूप में प्रसिद्ध है। इस पवित्र तिथि पर (2 फरवरी) मौन रहकर अथवा मुनियों के समान आचरणपूर्वक स्नान दान करने का विशेष महत्त्व है। अमावस्या के दिन सोमवार का योग होने पर उस दिन देवताओं को भी दुर्लभ हो ऐसा पुण्यकाल होता है, क्योंकि गंगा, पुष्कर एवं दिव्य अंतरिक्ष और भूमि के जो सब तीर्थ हैं, वे ‘सोमवती (दर्श) अमावस्या’ के दिन के जप, ध्यान, पूजन करने पर विशेष धर्मलाभ प्रदान करते हैं।

( वसंत पंचमी )

माघ शुक्ल पंचमी अर्थात् ‘वसंत पंचमी’ को माँ सरस्वती का आविर्भाव-दिवस माना जाता है। इस दिन (8 फरवरी) प्रातः सरस्वती-पूजन करना चाहिए। पुस्तक और लेखनी (कलम) में भी देवी सरस्वती का निवास स्थान माना जाता है, अतः उनकी भी पूजा की जाती है।

( अचला सप्तमी)

शुक्ल पक्ष की सप्तमी को ‘अचला सप्तमी’ कहते हैं। षष्ठी के दिन एक बार भोजन करके सप्तमी को सूर्योदय से पूर्व स्नान करने से पापनाश, रूप, सुख-सौभाग्य और सदगति प्राप्त होती है।

(गुरुपुष्य अमृतयोग)

गुरुपुष्य अमृतयोग सर्व सिद्धिकर है , विवाह छोड़ कर अन्य मांगलिक कार्यों के लिए यह महाफलदायी है |

( माघी पूर्णिमा)

ऐसे तो माघ की प्रत्येक तिथि पुण्यपर्व है, तथापि उनमें भी माघी पूर्णिमा का धार्मिक दृष्टि से बहुत महत्त्व है। इस दिन) स्नानादि से निवृत्त होकर भगवत्पूजन, श्राद्ध तथा दान करने का विशेष फल है। जो इस दिन भगवान शिव की विधिपूर्वक पूजा करता है, वह अश्वमेध यज्ञ का फल पाकर भगवान विष्णु के लोक में प्रतिष्ठित होता है।
माघी पूर्णिमा के दिन तिल, सूती कपड़े, कम्बल, रत्न, पगड़ी, जूते आदि का अपने वैभव के अनुसार दान करके मनुष्य स्वर्गलोक में सुखी होता है। ‘मत्स्य पुराण’ के अनुसार इस दिन जो व्यक्ति ‘ब्रह्मवैवर्त पुराण’ का दान करता है, उसे ब्रह्मलोक की प्राप्ति होती है।

The Significance & Glory of the Month of Magh

Describing the significance and glory of the month of Magh, it is said that Lord Sri Hari is not pleased so much by observance of pious vows, charities and tapsaya, as He is just by taking a bath in the Brahma-muhurta (the period of two and a half hours before sunrise). Therefore, everybody should take bath in the Brahma-muhurta in the month of Magh so as to get delivered of sins and to be blessed with love for the Lord. The bathing for the month of Magh starts from the Purnima of the month of Pausha.

The peculiar quality of the month of Magh is that in this month all the water is equivalent to the water of Ganga. Every day of this month is a festival. If because of weakness, one is unable to take a vow of taking bath in the Brahma-muhurta in the whole of the month of Magh, the scriptures allow that such a vow should be taken for three days or at least for one day. Bath, charity, fasting and worship in this month is highly rewarding.

Vishnupadi Sankranti 12th Feb13(12:53pm to Sunset)-जप लाख गुना फलदायी.

The Ekadashi of Magh ) is known as ‘Shatatila Ekadashi’. Donating black sesame seeds and black cow on this day is considered to be of great religious merit. Taking a bath with water mixed with sesame seeds, smearing sesame unguent, fire sacrifice with sesame seeds as oblation, drinking water mixed with sesame seeds, eating sesame seeds and donating sesame seeds – these six things are destroyers of sin.

The Amavasya of Magh (no Moon day falling inthis holy month )is known as ‘Mauni Amavasya’. Keeping silent or conducting oneself like a sage on this pious day along with taking bath and giving charities is full of great religious merit. If the ‘Mauni Amavasya’ falls on Monday, it is full of so much religious merit as is difficult to attain even for gods because all the holy places on the earth and in the heavens – Ganga, Pushkar, etc. – afford particularly great religious merit for japa, meditation and worship on a Monday (Somvati) Amavasya.

Amavasya on Monday, seventh lunar day on Sunday, fourth lunar day on Tuesday, eighth lunar day on Wednesday – these four days are equivalent to solar eclipse. Taking bath, giving charities and performing Shraddha on these days affords inexhaustible religious merit.

The fifth lunar day of bright fortnight of Magh (Vasant Panchami) is believed to be the manifestation-day of Ma Saraswati. One should worship Ma Saraswati in the morning on this day (8th February’11). Ma Saraswati is believed to reside in the books and pens as well. Therefore, these articles too are worshipped on this day.

The seventh lunar day of bright fortnight of Magh is known as ‘Achala Saptami’. One should take only one meal on the sixth lunar day and should take bath before sunrise on the seventh. This destroys sins and affords handsomeness, happiness, good fortune and good spiritual state.

That way, each day of Magh is pious; yet the Magh Purnima is highly significant. Worship of the Lord, Shraddha and charities performed on this day after ablutions is of great religious merit. One performing puja of Lord Shiva in prescribed manner attains religious merit equal to that from performing an ashwamedha yajna and finds a place in Lord Vishnu’s abode.

Giving away of sesame seeds, cotton clothes, blankets, jewels, turbans and shoes etc. as per one’s capacity on the Magh Purnima affords one happiness and a place in the heavens. According to Matsya Purana, one who donates Brahma-Vaivarta Purana on this day attains to the abode of Lord Brahma.
